Recipe: Halloween Spooky Bones

Halloween is just around the corner, and if like us you not only love Halloween but also love a good excuse to do some baking, then you might like to give these treats a try. If you do get the odd dog here and there do a bit of Trick Or Treating with their family, it would be great to have a little snack to give to them. We think that much like vampires when they step into daylight, these treats will disappear in an instant when offered to any dog visitors.

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana (peeled)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons of peanut butter (preferably low in fat)
  • 2/3 of a cup of rolled oats
  • 1 cup of oat flour

Most dogs like bananas, so it’s a great snack to use as a healthy alternative training treat or snack. Bananas are a fantastic superfood, high in potassium, fibre, and vitamin B and C. Peanut butter contains a great level of protein and carbohydrates. A little goes a long way, and as with humans, peanut butter should still be consumed in moderation.

Preparation:

Preheat your oven to 150 celsius and line an oven tray with baking paper. Place the banana in a large mixing bowl and mash it up thoroughly. Once mashed, you can then add the oat flour, oats, egg and about three tablespoons of peanut butter, and continue to stir up into the mixture.

Once a more solid and harder dough has formed, take approximately 1 tablespoon sized piece from the bowl to create a small bone shape, and place on the tray. For this size you should be able to make about 20 bones. Use a bone-shaped cookie cutter, or if you don’t have one try moulding the bones yourself and flattening the cookies on the tray with a rolling pin. Once you have used all your dough place the baking tray into the oven for approximately 45 minutes. The bones should turn to a nice, golden brown colour. Once ready, please set aside the bones to cool off.

Office dog Bandit sampled some of these treats for us, and we can confirm that they were a huge success. If you have any favourite recipes that you like to use for your dogs, please let us know by emailing hello@tails.com.
