Recipe: Cinnamon & Papaya Happy Breath Flapjacks

We all know how unpleasant it can be when your pooch suffers from a bad case of ‘dog breath’. If you have a little time and like to do a spot of baking, it might be worth giving this recipe a try for healthy, teeth-friendly flapjacks.

Ingredients:

* 200 grams of rolled oats

* 1 1/2 tablespoons of honey

* 3 tablespoons of sunflower oil

* 1 tablespoon of cinnamon

* 3-6 tablespoons of dried papaya (chopped into small pieces)

* 1 egg, beaten

Cinnamon and papaya are great healthy ingredients for dogs. Cinnamon is an antimicrobial agent, which regulates blood sugar and is one of the many anti-inflammatories that can be added to help dogs with joint problems and/or arthritis. It has also been known to help improve bad dog breath.

Papaya is another hidden gem with many health benefits. As well as being rich in fiber, papaya is a great source of calcium and helps to strengthen your dog’s immune system. The enzymes in papaya can act as cleaning agents and the proteins help to build beneficial barriers in the mouth. Dogs love this tasty, tropical fruit, and it is certainly a nice change from a regular dry dog biscuit.

Cooking instructions:

Place all the ingredients into a medium saucepan and stir them for a few minutes on a low heat. Spoon the mixture onto a baking tray, smooth it down with a spatula or the back of a spoon and bake for 20 minutes at 180ºC.

Allow the flapjacks to cool down before cutting into shapes. With these ingredients you should be able to divide into approximately eight bars. Then all you need is a willing canine participant to sample the flapjacks for you. Office dog and resident crumb-hoover Bandit never turns down the chance to try a new snack and has given the flapjacks her seal of approval.
