Recipe: Bandit’s Wheat Free Apple Crunchies

Being dog owners ourselves, we know how difficult it can be when your dog suffers from an intolerance to certain ingredients. If you do happen to have a dog that would prefer not to have wheat, this would be a great recipe for you to try out at home.

The main ingredient of this recipe is apple, which is a great and healthy snack. The saying of ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ doesn’t just apply to humans, but to dogs too.

With their sweet crunchy taste that dogs love, also comes a whole slew of health benefits. Apples and are a great source of Vitamins A, C and fibre.

Please note that you should not allow your dog to eat the seeds from the apple. These seeds contain cyanide, which can be poisonous. Although if your dog eats a whole apple core, complete with seeds, from time to time this is not going to do them any harm. Harmful effects can accumulate over time if they eat them regularly.

Ingredients:

* 2 eggs

* 200g rice flour

* 90g of rolled oats

* 4 apples

* 1 tablespoon of cinnamon

* 3 tablespoons of honey

Cooking Instructions:

* Preheat your oven to 175C

* Line a baking tray with baking paper.

* Take a medium sized bowl and mix together the rice flour and oats, with the tablespoon of cinnamon.

* Take 2 apples and blend them in a food processor to make apple sauce.

* Using a fine grater, shred the remaining 2 apples as finely as possible.

* In a smaller bowl, add the eggs, freshly grated apple, apple sauce and three tablespoons of honey, and blend together nicely.

* Create a circular well-like hole in your larger bowl and pour in the apple sauce mixture.

* Stir together to create a more solid mixture.

* Time to get your hands dirty! Shape the mixture into teaspoon sized chunks and place them on the baking tray.

* This amount of mixture should allow for approximately 50-70 treats. Of course if you have a larger dog and you would prefer to create larger sized treats, that’s up to you.

* Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the apple crunchies are golden brown. Ideally they should look a little bit like chicken nuggets.

*Allow to cool down before serving. As always, feed in moderation!

These treats can be stored in your refrigerator for up to three weeks, or in the freezer for up to four months.
